Getting an exercise routine together can be very difficult if you haven't done it before. A lot of people grow up with exercise programs, starting off in school basketball, football, or track, and learn to exercise on their own after they give up on
intramural sports. For those of us who didn't grow up as active, however, it can be difficult to stay in shape on our own. This is why it can be so useful to have a personal trainer or at least a regular exercise class to get you on the right track.
No one in my family grew up with a regular exercise program. We were intellectual to the point where we sort of looked down on physical activity. When we were kids, we liked to run around, play tag, and stay active that way, but as we got older, we became more and more sedentary. I was in reasonably good shape because I would go to concerts and dance, but I never had any sort of exercise program. That is why, as I got into my mid-20s, I started to get in really bad shape physically.
Going to the doctor for a checkup was sort of a reality check for me. I learned that I had high blood pressure, I was overweight, and I was at elevated risk for a number of different health problems. My doctor told me to get a regular exercise program together, and I intended to immediately. I thought I would go jogging on my own, but it just didn't seem to happen. I would skip days or cut into my exercise routine instead of going for the whole time. Finally, I realized that I needed outside help.
I started with an exercise class. I figured that going to an aerobics course at the local gym twice a week would be enough to get started. Pretty soon, I was going three and then four times each week. My exercise program was really getting into high gear. I was using some weight loss software to help me keep track of how effective my exercises were, and generally getting more serious about keeping in good shape. I even ended up moving to the next step and getting a personal trainer. It took me a while, but now I'm finally in great shape and really enjoying myself. I'm in my late 20s, but I'd have to say that I'm in the best shape of my life. Starting an exercise program was frustrating, and slow to get started, but it was worth it in the long run.
